Matt's story idea

I realize that it is technically Sunday, but as far as my circadian rhythms are concerned, it Saturday. I've been thinking a lot about what I want to write my next story on, and I can only keep thinking about focusing on the media. I think the advent of the 24 hour news cycle and the polarization of our media outlets is very interesting. This interest has led me to consider writing a story about a man who is obsessed with consuming media. Perhaps I wil cause him to lose his connection with reality, or perhaps I'll turn the idea on its head and have him recognize the absence of true "reality" within his/our lives. Who knows what will come of this though. I could be swimming in the deep end with this one. Let me know what you think, or suggest any ideas if you have them.

  1. This sounds like a great idea, you could really put some interesting stories in there. I can't wait to see what you decide!

  3. I like this idea a lot. I agree that it will be a difficult topic because of the sheer amount of information you will need to weave into the story. But im fascinated with the idea that the media that we recognize as reporting only the facts, may, in fact, be reporting a fabrication. Im interested to see where you take this and i think if you are able to focus the attention of the story it could very well be a great story.

  4. It's an interesting premise, though, of course there needs to be a STORY Matt. Who is this guy? What happens? Why does this matter not just to us media crazed readers, but to him?

  5. All good, helpful feedback. As far as the actual story goes, I've been writing a bit tonight and have found some sort of direction. I've situated the main (and potentially only) character in his apartment. I'm trying to feed the reader bits and pieces about how desocialized this man actually is, through facts such as an empty freezer, absence of contact with others, perhaps no internet or phone, no job, late bills - I really want to make him seem like a shut in. I'm also attempting to thread in the idea of some sort of social unrest occurring outside his apartment. I've yet to decide whether I want this to be a product of his (potential) psychosis, or have there actually be rioting and mayhem. I will then use the media and the news he watches to feed into his fears and delusions. In the end, I want him to attempt to leave the apartment. Let me know what you think, or if you foresee any pitfalls.

  6. I love this idea. I think you could really do a lot with imagery/description of the different forms of media and almost have them take on a persona against him or something. Great idea.
