Idea 1: The story is from the point of view of a man in his mid twenties to early thirties. He is getting ready to propose to his girlfriend. He spends the whole day getting things ready for her. He plans this whole romantic evening that any girl would love, but when he pops the question, he is turned down. The man is furious at her denial and ends the relationship, badly.
Idea 2: Another story I was thinking (equally or possibly even more depressing) is a story about euthanasia. My main character will seem fairly depressed in the first place, his life will seem pretty terrible. Then an accident will occur, an unintentional mistake that will cause the main character to be bound to a hospital room. He will be in so much pain day after day and will request the hospital staff to just end it for him. They will refuse, (mostly because euthanasia is illegal) and the boy will be left to suffer in his awful life, with his horrid family, and now with as much physical pain as he has emotional.
P.S. HELP!
Sam, I think you'll find the first idea more enjoyable to write, while the second sounds like it may lend itself to melodrama and a more dragging architecture of plot. I recommend throwing a third or fourth character into the mix (for the first idea), and access flashbacks so you free yourself from the "day in the life" prescription. Also, I would recommend that, rather than asking the girl to marry him, the protagonist goes for something more subdued (proposals can lend themselves easily to cliche and can become so heavy handed). What if he's asking her to move in? Or giving her a key and a couple drawers in his dresser? Or what if he bought her a puppy? And then, if she reacts badly, it could tell us a lot more about his expectations and misconceptions about the person he loves, rather than the utter betrayal a dejected marriage proposal implies.
ReplyDeleteAlright, that does sound more enjoyable to write about then my original plan. Thank you!
