Okay, so I've been going over many ideas for my story and I think I found one, but I need help! I was playing with the idea that a boy with cancer has been in the hospital for a while and his doctor has become a sort of mentor for the boy. The boy and the doctor love playing chess (going to be a metaphor for cancer spreading). Somewhere along the line the boy asks the doctor to help him achieve a goal he has been wanting for a while, but that means they have to leave the institution (not sure what the goal is yet). Basically what would happen later would be that the reader would see that there is a search for TWO escaped patients. The reader starts to understand that the doctor has cancer as well, but the boy is still unaware. (hints that the doctor has cancer will be dropped throughout the piece, but the reader will not start putting it together until the moment where the police announce the search for two patients). At the end, the doctor would pass away and the boy would go visit his grave and leave a white chess pon there. I know the last part doesn't make sense yet, but I can't give ALL of it away! If anyone has any ideas to add that they wish to share, it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Nicole, I think this could work quite well. I'll be interested to see how you balance the boy's and the search party's POVs.
